Fivetran to Lead Great Expectations Open Source Community and GX Core Project
Fivetran, a leading data movement and AI infrastructure platform, has announced plans to become the steward of the Great Expectations open source community and the GX Core project. The move is expected to strengthen one of the most widely adopted open source data quality frameworks used by enterprises and data teams worldwide.
Under the proposed transition, GX Core will remain an open source and community-driven project. Fivetran plans to continue supporting project maintenance, ecosystem integrations, and developer community engagement to ensure long-term innovation and reliability.
According to Anjan Kundavaram, Chief Product Officer at Fivetran, the rise of artificial intelligence has increased the need for transparent and reliable data systems across industries.
“AI increases the importance of open and trustworthy data systems. Practitioners need infrastructure that works across clouds, platforms, and tools without locking them into closed ecosystems. The GX community has built an important part of that foundation,” Kundavaram said.
The stewardship initiative aligns with Fivetran’s broader Open Data Infrastructure strategy, which focuses on enabling organizations to freely access, move, and utilize data across multiple systems and cloud environments. The initiative was introduced alongside Fivetran’s planned merger with dbt Labs in October 2025.
Fivetran’s Open Data Infrastructure vision aims to support interoperable and scalable data ecosystems for analytics and AI applications while preserving flexibility and freedom of choice for businesses and developers.
As AI adoption accelerates and enterprises increasingly rely on autonomous workflows, trusted and high-quality data has become essential for operational success. Great Expectations helps organizations validate, monitor, and maintain data quality across modern data platforms, improving confidence in analytics, AI systems, and enterprise operations.
Hernan Alvarez, CEO at Great Expectations, emphasized the importance of reliable data infrastructure in the AI era.
“The GX community has always focused on helping practitioners build systems they can trust. We believe Fivetran understands the growing importance of open, reliable data infrastructure in the AI era and is well positioned to help support the continued growth of the GX Core community,” Alvarez stated.
As part of the planned stewardship transition, Fivetran also expects to expand its engineering team by hiring talent experienced in developing the GX Core project, helping ensure continued innovation, maintenance, and community support.
