Nextracker, a global leader in solar tracking and smart energy solutions, has announced the launch of a groundbreaking AI and robotics business initiative. This bold move includes the appointment of the company’s first Chief AI and Robotics Officer and the acquisition of cutting-edge technology firms—all aimed at revolutionizing solar energy operations.
$40 Million Investment in AI and Robotics for Solar Innovation
Over the last four quarters, Nextracker has invested more than $40 million to acquire three advanced AI and robotics technologies. These strategic acquisitions are designed to enhance Nextracker’s digital platform, improving solar power plant deployment, reliability, quality control, and overall return on investment (ROI) for asset owners worldwide.
Leadership Spotlight: Dr. Francesco Borrelli Joins as Chief AI & Robotics Officer
To spearhead this ambitious AI transformation, Dr. Francesco Borrelli has been appointed as Chief AI and Robotics Officer, a new executive position at Nextracker. A pioneer in predictive control systems, Dr. Borrelli brings decades of experience from the robotics, automotive, and industrial automation sectors. He will lead the integration of AI, machine learning, and robotics into Nextracker’s global product ecosystem.
“With millions of sensors and control nodes across 100 GW of operating systems in over 40 countries, we’re uniquely positioned to deploy AI and robotics at scale,” said Dan Shugar, CEO of Nextracker. “Dr. Borrelli’s vision will help us unlock actionable insights and deliver greater value to our customers globally.”
Driving Autonomous Solar Operations for the Future
According to Dr. Borrelli:
“Scaling solar to meet rising global demand requires smarter, more autonomous operations. At Nextracker, we’re turning real-time field data into immediate action—improving solar plant performance, minimizing risk, and accelerating deployment timelines.”
This move signals a broader trend in renewable energy technology, where automation and data analytics are becoming critical to performance and profitability.
Acquisition Spotlight: OnSight Technology Joins Nextracker
As part of its AI and robotics expansion, Nextracker has acquired OnSight Technology, a trailblazer in autonomous inspection and AI-based fire detection systems for solar plants. OnSight’s predictive maintenance tools detect mechanical and electrical issues before they escalate, allowing asset managers to:
- Reduce operational risk
- Maximize uptime
- Proactively manage site health
OnSight’s team of robotics engineers, field specialists, and product developers has now joined Nextracker, with commercial product availability already launched in the U.S. and global expansion planned for 2026.
“Joining Nextracker enables us to scale our mission of delivering smarter diagnostics to the solar field,” said Derek Chase, CEO of OnSight. “Together, we’re helping operators respond faster, reduce risk, and boost solar plant ROI.”
