Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) has received a spaceflight operator licence from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), a significant step forward in Europe’s growing space launch industry.
This licence, which is the first in Europe for vertical launches of privately developed orbital rockets, clears the way for RFA’s first test flight in 2025. Combined with licenses already granted to SaxaVord Spaceport in Scotland, all regulatory requirements are now in place for this major milestone in European space exploration.
The spaceflight operator licence is valid indefinitely and permits a variety of launch trajectories and orbits, highlighting RFA’s adherence to strict safety and operational standards. This is a key moment not only for RFA but for Europe’s broader ambitions in space, as the region looks to compete with established players in the global space sector.
Matt Archer, Director of Launch at the UK Space Agency, said the approval demonstrates the UK’s readiness to host vertical rocket launches. He emphasized the importance of this collaboration between RFA, SaxaVord Spaceport, and international partners, noting the potential to create skilled jobs and inspire future talent in aerospace.
RFA’s test flight is seen as a pivotal moment in Europe’s quest for independent space access. The company aims to meet the growing demand for affordable and flexible satellite launches. Notable progress has been made, including the flight qualification of key systems such as the second stage of RFA’s rocket, the Redshift orbital transfer vehicle, and the payload fairing system.
RFA is also making significant progress on the rocket’s first stage, which features nine Helix staged-combustion engines. A full test of the engines is scheduled at SaxaVord Spaceport as part of preparations for the upcoming flight.
UK Civil Aviation Authority CEO, Rob Bishton, called the licence approval a historic step for the UK’s space industry. He stressed that the approval process included extensive work to ensure safety and environmental protection measures were in place, and highlighted how effective licensing is helping the expanding space sector reach new heights.
With the licence in place, RFA is poised to contribute significantly to Europe’s space ambitions, paving the way for future innovations and advancements in space technology.
